What do you do with all the kids' artwork?

You can't keep them all, and it's hard to throw them away. Here are our tips for sorting, keeping and showing off the best drawings.

Tip 1

Sort as you go, and keep the best

A preschooler can easily make hundreds of drawings a year. Keeping them all isn't realistic, and it doesn't need to be. Have one box or folder for new drawings, and sort it once a month.

Keep the ones that tell a story: the first drawing of a person, the family portrait, the drawing from the first holiday and the ones your child is proud of. Let your child help choose. Write the name and date on the back, so you remember when it was made.

Tip 2

Take a photo of the drawings

Paper fades, creases and gets lost. A photo with your phone keeps the drawing forever and takes up no space. Lay the drawing flat in good daylight and photograph it straight from above, without shadows.

Once the drawings are photographed, it's easier to let go of the paper. You can always find them again, and you can use the photos for more than an album.

Tip 3

Show them off on the wall

Drawings are made to be seen. A string with pegs or a pinboard works for the newest ones, while the best deserve a more lasting place.

With a poster of kids' drawings you gather a whole year of drawings in one collage. We lift each drawing off the paper and arrange them so it looks like art, not a pinboard. Make a new one every year, and you'll have a little series that shows how your child has grown.

And the drawings make a gift in themselves: a poster is also a lovely Christmas gift for grandparents.

Questions and answers

How many kids' drawings should you keep?

There's no right number. Many people keep a handful a month: the ones that say something about the child, or that the child is proud of.

How do you take a good photo of a drawing?

Lay the drawing flat in good daylight and hold your phone straight above it, so there are no shadows. Get the whole sheet in.

Is it OK to throw kids' drawings away?

Yes. Photograph the ones you want to remember, and let your child help choose which to keep on paper.
